How to Downsize When Moving

Are you looking around and realizing you have a house full of stuff and you’re getting anxious about moving it all? Moving can be stressful enough, but if you can sort through your belongings before the big move, it will make the transition easier.

• Start with considering your new space. Take a look at your style and the size of your new home. Consider only taking with you the furniture that will fit in your home. If you have two living rooms currently, but only one in your new home, take the time to figure out which living room furniture is going with you and which one you can part with.

• Downsize your wardrobe. This one will be tough for a lot of people. Does your new home have smaller closets or less storage space? It’s time to take a hard look at your clothing and determine what clothes you can donate or throw out. A good rule of thumb is to use the six-month rule- if you haven’t worn it in six months, it’s time to part with it. Of course, there may always be a few sentimental exceptions.

• Downsize your electronics. Go through your electronics and recycle anything that is old, broken or extra. You really don’t need all 12 of those phone chargers. A good idea when doing this, pair the cord with the electronic in a baggie so that you can get a clear idea of what cables are truly extra and what electronics may be missing a cord.

Buying a home and moving can be very stressful for all parties involved. Include the family, make it a fun activity for kids. Just don’t leave the sorting to just one party.
